“We feel more prepared to support our children in their education” FISS Graduation for the Mujeres Victoriosas (Victorious Women) Group.

The Family Institute for Student Success (FISS) Leadership Committee, Andrew O’LearyAssistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, and Sonia Walmsley, Executive Director of Educational Access & Pathways, congratulated the Mujeres Victoriosas (Victorious Women)  Group for their graduation from the virtual FISS program. The FISS Leadership Committee also expressed gratitude to the New Bedford Public Schools administration team for its support in hosting the nine-week program. They praised the recruiters, facilitators, and staff for exceeding expectations to engage families through the program. NBPS continues to virtually educate, engage, and empower families to ensure student success.

Andrew O’Leary, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, congratulated the families for their commitment in completing the Family Institute. He stated, “We are here to honor parents who graduate from our Family Institute for Student Success and families are what make students successful. I cannot help but think of my own parents. Thank you for helping us learn what matters: what a school is for. This is your school; this is your school district. All of you and all of us will continue to work together to make it even better".

Patricia Riz, FISS graduate added, " At FISS, we learned extraordinary things that we didn’t know before. These things impact the development of our children in different social environments. With the help of technology, parents and teachers become one to ensure the wellbeing of our children. We feel more prepared to support our children in their education. We now know how the school system works and how grades work. We can now communicate better with teachers and be engaged in the education of our children.”

The FISS Leadership Committee and Pacheco administration extend their appreciation to the following students: Ivanna Zuniga for leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Luisa Cu Raymundo for the beautiful poem and Jyan Alejandro for being our amazing bilingual master of ceremony.

Since FISS started in 2019, we have graduated over 177 families, which directly supports over 302 New Bedford Public Schools students across the district. For more information on this program, please contact Orlenda Jackson at  [email protected].
