How does Title I operate in New Bedford Public Schools?

Title I is Federally funded to the State. Funds for Title I are secured by writing a complex grant to the State.

  • Preschool

    1. Five teachers provide service for a maximum of 200 four year old children in half day sessions in Title I classrooms at Gomes, Brooks, and Pacheco Schools.
    2. Children must reside in New Bedford and be age four by the start of the school yer.
    3. Bus transportation is available in designated areas of the city.

    4. The Program addresses the development of readiness school skills, social, emotional and physical skills.
    5. A preschool facilitator coordinates the program at the schools.

  • Elementary

    1. Title I assistance is provided in all elementary schools.
    2. All schools are Title I Schoolwide projects at this time
    3. Teachers are funded by Title I to reduce class size.
    4. Technology, reading, and ongoing assessments of academic skills are the focus of Title I activities.
    5. Teaching and Learning Specialists (TLS) support our teachers and students in level 3 and 4 schools to increase academic performance.

  •  Middle School 

    1. Teaching and Learning Specialists support our teachers and students in all three middle schools to increase student, academic performance.
    2. Online reading programs as interventions supported in the ELA and SEI classrooms with struggling readers.
    3. Professional Development (PD) for literacy and instructional practices.

    4. Embedded PD, professional learning communities for reading instruction associated with our oonline reading programs.

    5. Suport in professional development for school-to-home teacher visits.

  • High School

    1. Funding, staffing and continued involvement in the College and Career Forward Family Engagement Center.
    2. Consultation to support our teachers and students to increase student, academic performance.
    3. Online reading programs as interventions in the ELA and SEI classrooms with struggling readers.
    4. Embedded PD, professional learning communities for reading instruction associated with our online reading programs.


  • Parent Program 

    1. Each school develops both a parent policy statement and a parent compact which is distributed to parents during Open House or are contained in the school handbook.
    2. Title I works cooperatively with individual schools to involve parents in the educational process at the school level.
    3. Two Parent Support Liasons assist schools with parental involvement activities focusing on literacy development.
    4. The Title I Office maintains a District Parent Involvement Policy.
