FARM TO SCHOOL PROGRAM - Vision

New Bedford’s Farm to School Program aims to provide all students equal access to a food culture that supports and fulfills the whole child, including their diverse mental and physical needs. We plan to do this by integrating culturally appropriate, locally sourced, nutritious foods with interactive education and sustainable agriculture.

UMASS EXTENSION NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM

UMass Extension Nutrition Education Program provides nutrition education to the students of the New Bedford Public Schools and the New Bedford community. Nutrition education activities with youth participants promote healthy food choices and regular physical activity at in-school and out-of-school settings and often include parents, caretakers, and other family members.

UMass Extension provides a series of 4 lessons using the USDA accredited Show Me Nutrition curriculum as part of the district health program and also offers after-school content. The topics include MyPlate, various food groups and their health benefits, physical activity and food safety to promote general health and wellness.

The NBPS Food and Nutrition Services department partners with the Umass Extension Nutrition Education Program to provide taste test samples of fresh fruits and vegetables that accompany nutrition lessons in the classroom!
